I am a wedding photographer on a mission to make wedding planning less overwhelming by showing you useful pictures and videos of venues in Hertfordshire and beyond. I found planning my own wedding quite difficult because of a lack of info about venues - particularly photographs as I'm a very visual person! The farm is part of the Soil Association Land Trust which supports the farm’s mission to promote a sustainable, climate friendly future; with rich biodiversity, fully organic food production whilst improving the environment for local wildlife and supporting the local community. A hive of activity for local residents the farm is a wonderful community space that boasts more than just a barn but a series of small businesses and has a wonderful community feel.


This venue has soul at it's heart and the space to host up to 150 people seated and 200 standing. The land also contains much more than the barn - there's a tap room, an events field and a tea shack and the team are great at recommending the perfect set up for you with local suppliers too.

The perfect venue for a festival style wedding.


The black barn at Woodoaks Farm is such a unique and versatile space that could easily be dressed up to give exactly the vibe that you want for your big day. From a music festival to a warehouse-style dance party you could truly make the space your own.


If this feels like your kind of vibe then I recommend heading to the venue for an excellent bacon sandwich at the Tea Shack (my personal favourite Sunday morning activity) and go for a walk around the space to really get a feel for it.

Ran by the extremely talented Mel, Golden Rose flower farm is a magical place that specialises in organic growing methods and promotes British blooms!


It's an incredible thing to know exactly how and where your wedding flowers were grown and this is something that Mel is on hand to make happen for you! I caught up with her to quiz her about all things British blooms and the best way to DIY wedding flowers.


Why should I prioritise British grown blooms? 


From an environmental perspective British flowers are much friendlier to the environment with a British grown bouquet containing only around 10% of the co2 emissions compared to an imported bouquet. Our flowers aren’t grown with any pesticides or chemicals meaning you can safely stick your nose in our flowers to enjoy the scent and be confident that growing your flowers hasn’t caused any harm to the local wildlife.


We also don’t use any artificial heat or light to grow our flowers, meaning they are as seasonal as possible, and of course no single-use plastics are used for your flowers. 


In terms of the flowers themselves you have so much more diversity with British flowers, with scent, texture and movement as they don’t have to survive the shipping and sortation systems of mass produced flowers grown around the world. Each arrangement from me is unique as all of the flowers are individual.


What months can you get British blooms? 


Generally we have flowers available from the end of March to the end of September, although in time we will be able to extend our growing period with the introduction of polytunnels to give the plants a little protection from the frosts. You can buy British flowers from other growers for most of the year if you are looking for a gift bouquet, you just need to do a little more searching to find someone who can offer a postal service  – www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk is a good place to start


What’s your top 3 tips for DIYing wedding flowers? 


1. Make sure whoever is in charge of flowers feels comfortable with doing what you are hoping for. I’m more than happy for you to bring them along with you for your wedding flower consultation so that everyone’s on the same page.


2. Have your vessels in advance so that you can test your flowers in the actual vases/bowls etc that you will be using, to ensure you are happy with the amount of stems needed.


3. Ignore the ‘rule book’ and go with your gut on what feels right, and if you are feeling really stuck on colours or what flowers go well together just have a wander outside in nature and see what colours are naturally growing together.


How do I know if I want to DIY my own wedding flower arrangements or get a florist to do the set up? 


DIYing your own flowers gives everything an extra layer of personal touch which is absolutely what some couples are looking for. Lots of our couples want this element added to their day, however they don’t want the stress of creating the bridal bouquet which I then create for them. 

I think if you are feeling stressed about doing them yourself at all then it’s best to bring in some help, either by asking a florist to create your flowers for you, or signing up to a bouquet making class which will really help give you the confidence to proceed.


What services do you provide? 


For weddings we offer seasonal mixed buckets for the wedding party to use, which can be curated to your colour theme. Our most popular weddings are a ‘pick and mix’ offering of seasonal buckets for the bridal party to create the venue flowers, and then I create the bouquets and buttonholes. 


I also offer a full service package where I create the wedding party flowers as well as the venue flowers such as table centre pieces.


What makes Golden Rose Flower Farm special? 


I find it hard to put into words, but it has the ability to just put you at ease a little, perhaps it’s the impact of being outside in nature and giving yourself time to slow down a little from the busyness of everyday life, or the sense of being part of the community when on the farm.


What’s the hardest thing about running a flower farm? 


The unpredictability of the British weather for sure, every year is different, meaning you never know exactly when flowers will start and finish. This is particularly tricky when you know couples would love something specific to be included in their wedding flowers.


What are your favourite flowers for weddings? 


Oh I love them all and get excited as every new variety starts to flower on the farm. My favourites change as we go through the season which is what I think makes seasonal British flowers so special. I love the showy ‘feature’ flowers such as Ranunculus, Roses and Dahlias but I equally love all the smaller stems that add the texture and movement or scent to a bouquet or arrangement like Orlaya, Nigella seed heads, or cinnamon basil for a wonderful scent.


What’s your ideal wedding flower colour palette?


I’m naturally drawn to pastel shades in spring and early summer and the deeper, richer shades later in the season, so it’s great when couples give a challenge with a unique colour palette. I would love to create a red and pink wedding, and also an all white wedding as that would be new to me, and I think the texture used within this colour palette would be so important.
